Lumumba, aka hot chocolate with rum, is an absolute comfort drink for cold winter days. Whether to warm up after a winter walk or after a successful day of skiing on the mountain. But so that the last ski run from the mountain does not become the most dangerous because of the Lumumba, you should instead enjoy the hot chocolate with rum after skiing, in the hotel, or at home and not in the ski hut before the last run 😉
The beauty of this recipe is that it is straightforward and quick to make. You only need three ingredients to make a Lumumba. Then a little milk froth or whipped cream and chocolate sprinkle to garnish, and you're ready to go. Your boozy treat is ready to be enjoyed!
Another plus for this drink is that you can make it easily allergy-friendly. Basically, the Lumumba is gluten-free and fructose-free. If you swap out the milk with a vegan or lactose-free alternative, you have a vegan or lactose-free drink. Incredible, isn't it?
- 8.45 fl oz (250 ml) Milk
- 2 Tablespoons Raw Cocoa Powder
- 1.35 fl oz (40 ml / 4 cl) Brown Rum
- Milk froth or whipped cream for garnishing
- Chocolate Sprinkles or grated chocolate for garnishing
Heat about three-quarters of the milk in a saucepan or microwave to a comfortable drinking temperature.
Now stir the raw cocoa powder in the hot milk. If you like, you can also use a whisk to make sure that the cocoa is well dissolved. I opted for just the spoon, and it worked great.
Now measure 4 cl of the rum and pour it directly into a large mug from which you want to drink. Now pour in the cocoa and mix it with the rum. Create a delicious milk froth using a milk frother or steamer and garnish your Lumumba with it with the remaining milk. Last but not least, sprinkle the chocolate flakes on top, and your comfort drink for cold winter days is ready!
💭 Top tip
I used pure Criollo cocoa powder in this recipe, not a ready-made sweetened hot cocoa mix. This raw cocoa makes the Lumumba a rather tart drink with a prominent rum flavor. If the pure cocoa is not sweet enough for you, you can sweeten it to taste at the end. I would still recommend trying it unsweetened first.
Lumumba can also be enjoyed very well cold and served as a cocktail in summer with ice cubes.
Make it vegan and replace the milk with vegan milk alternatives. Here you have the following options:
- oat milk
- rice milk
- soy milk
- almond milk
- spelt wheat milk
- nut milk (hazelnut, macadamia, cashew, etc.)
- lupine milk
- coconut milk
Especially the nut milk variants go particularly well with cocoa. It's best to try out what suits you best.
Use vegan chocolate (especially watch out for the chocolate sprinkles). Raw cacao powder is vegan because it is 100% raw cacao. You can also sprinkle your Lumumba with raw cacao powder instead of the sprinkles to keep it vegan.
In general, to be on the safe side with chocolate, always pay attention to the ingredients. Dark chocolate, for example, is usually really just cacao mass, cacao butter, and sugar. However, concentrated butter and milk powder are often hidden in dark chocolate (75% cocoa content and more) to keep production cheap.
What's the difference between hot cocoa and hot chocolate?
Hot cocoa is made with cocoa powder, milk and sweetener while hot chocolate is made with real chocolate, milk and sweetener.
Now that being said, many people and places that sell hot chocolate don't really pay attention to the difference. Often you pay for a cup of hot chocolate, but what you get is a cup of hot drink made with cocoa powder and water (not even milk).

Lumumba Hot Chocolate with Rum
- 250 ml Milk

- 40 ml Brown Rum
- Chocolate Sprinkles
- Milk Froth
- Whipped Cream optional
